New Year's Day Ships
I took a nap to the drone
of the rose bowl parade
dreaming my family and I
were on a enormous, gleaming white
brand new cruise ship.
Parallel and heading in the
opposite direction was the ship's twin,
rusted, almost empty but for the a few crew.
The thought occurred
i was going to end up sucked onto the old ship.
It seemed entirely possible
so I hurried down the crowded deck,
walking far away from the railing
afraid to look
worrying about where my children were
and would they see the danger?
Turning a corner,
I saw bad men clustered together talking.
I thought about getting off
a huge dock stood empty on the other side.
Our boat passing calmly between.
I didn't know where to look for the children.
So,I stopped for a moment, thinking
no port is entirely safe anyway.
Which is safer
land or passing through?
