Seeing Time

I see time in the movement of pavement beneath my feet. Every step is a symbolic and real vision of time. Trail trance is a term used when hikers watch their feet walking a trail.  You miss the landscape, the sky around you. Trail trances happen most when the ground is stony, uneven or vertically challenging.

But, I'll argue, looking down, I have the clearest vision of time. I can see the seconds passing in the dirt.  I am comforted by seeing time move forward rather than taking in the beauty of the landscape. Beauty requires the engagement of feeling, of the soul. Some of the hard days, I prefer a trance.

Look up, I tell myself because otherwise you'll miss life/ the day/ beauty.. Andrew sent me a card once. “Reach for the stars. Only in the dark, can you see the light.” I'm trying.
