Heroes and Monsters

I see the edge of mortality sweeping along in front of me as I walk, balancing, trying not to glance at the slopes on either side. I feel the urgency of living, of minutes passing away forever.

There are heroes living in this complicated place; this world with unequal measures of good and bad. I see them, the daily brave living without recognition. So much more heroism than makes social media or the news! And the ones that do, whose jobs demand heroism which has a pass or a fail attached to it.

I see the monsters more clearly too. How greed, the pressure of constant injustice, wars and illnesses like addictions can make the good even, into monsters. How odd we humans are; we can be hero’s and monsters in the same life,  in the same skin. In the same day, in fact. We can wake up kiss our family goodbye, curse out the driver in front of us.

I try to see, to listen to what monster wants; you’re angry, impatient and scared are the more common answers... and the hero? wants to make a difference, to make a world better. Wants to do and be what I am called to do.
